What an adventure this weekend was!

It all started Friday night when we left Cheyenne, headed to Rock Springs and the Sweetwater County Bridal Expo. Before we even got to Laramie, a +50mph gust caused us to fishtail on roads that were sheets of ice, a good time to stick it into 4WD and take it even slower, we were already well below the lowered speedlimit.

Four and a half hours later we finally pull in to the hotel, get our room an head straight to bed, driving in those conditions is just draining.

Saturday started off great! We got set up early, got a good breakfast and loaded up on Starbucks! Life was good and everything was going smoothly, many great conversations with some truly wonderful people, then about 2 hours into the event, the unrelenting wind causes the power goes out. Things slow down a bit and the fashion show part of the event moves to another location with natural light. Erin goes out to the truck to sit with Simon, our little red dog.

Fifteen minutes later I get a call from her and the only words I hear over the sound of the wind: “*static* lost *static* Simon *static* across *static* street *static*” In a panic I rush out to the truck just as the power came back on, grabbed some dog treats, forgot my jacket, and ran. Had I known how far they actually were I would have grabbed my jacket, or bet yet drove the truck over. By the time I did find them, Erin had managed to grab Simon, about 1/4 mile away, while he was busy investigating the remains of a dead bird. When I met up with them and we started heading back, Erin realized in the heat of the chase she lost her scarf, worse still, she lost her keys! She went and backtracked, I took Simon and put him back in the truck and got back inside to the bridal show as quickly as i could to warm up my now numb extremities.

When Erin got back a few minutes later, just as the show was concluding, she had successfully found her keys, and more importantly her scarf! We checked the road conditions online and thankfully it was still open. We started packing up our samples and display items, keeping our eye on the road conditions website. As we got everything packed neatly and ready to load in the truck, we watched as the interstate slowly closed section by section.

Oh well… better safe than sorry… we book room for the night, finish loading the truck, and prepare for another night in Rock Springs. We had some dinner and good conversation with great friends (Yes that’s you Kati, Levi and our new friend and fellow photographer, David) who were stuck with us. So it turned out to be a good relaxing night, even though it was forced upon us.

… but wait, our adventure does not end there!

We get up first thing in the morning, eager to hit the road, get home to get some work done and unwind from the events of the weekend. The roads are open so we get moving as quick as we can. Just as we start pulling into Rawlins the signs start showing that the interstate from there to Laramie had just closed! DANG IT!!!!

We meet up with Kati and Levi at one of the gas stations and debated on what to do: do we wait in hopes that it eventually opens, or do we head north to Casper and then back down to Cheyenne on I-25? Someone listening to our dilemma, having just come down from Casper, advised us that after about 15 miles out of town, the road north was dry. Eager to get home, and thinking that even if the road does open, it’ll be icy and nasty, we opt for the longer, dry route.

Tired and weary we finally pulled into Cheyenne around 4pm, Plenty of time to unload the truck and head down to the dungeon to spend several hours editing photos and trying to catch up on a lost days work!

I’ve been slacking off on this one… I actually photographed these just before the holidays, but wanted to wait until the magazine issue came out before posting anything, and then just have been crazy busy since then.

These are from a shoot I did at The Copper Kettle in downtown Laramie for a cooking article in Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine. I love doing work for them because it’s always something different and I can create images I normally don’t get to.

This one was a lot like photographing a wedding though. They were filming video footage as well so I had to be as stealthy, and no flashes so as not to mess up the footage. So everything but the portrait was just lighting that was already there, and since they do cooking classes, the lighting was amazing.

What I loved about this shoot was all the detail images. I was able to dust off the macro lens really get in there close, and create a shallow depth of focus.

I can’t believe it’s that time again! The last SEVERAL months have just flown by and I haven’t been able to keep up here as much as I would have liked. It’s a new year and that’s all going to change! I am trying hard to work smarter and get more organized, and while I’m far from being there, I’m making progress.

Right now we are scrambling to get ready for the 2012 wedding season! We have our first bridal show here in Cheyenne this next weekend.

The Cheyenne Bridal Expo is being held at the Holiday Inn on Sunday, January 29th from noon to 4pm, The Laramie Bridal Expo will be on February 19th at the Hilton Garden Inn From 1pm to 4pm. Admission is free to both events and there are always a ton of giveaways, and I hear the big one this year is a cruise!

We will also be attending the Rock Springs Bridal show again this year, and admission is free for this one as well! I don’t have complete details on that one yet but I do know that it’s on Saturday, February 25th. As soon as I have the info I’ll be sure to post that! *UPDATE* – The rock Springs Bridal show will be held on February 25th at the Holiday Inn from noon to 3pm!

These shows are always so much fun! Meeting people, talking to brides about their weddings, and catching up with other vendors. So be sure to come on out and chat with us, we’d love to talk about your wedding and how we can help tell your story!

I had an awesome time with Ashley and her family. I had done some business portraits for her grandmother and they decided when they were in town, visiting from the west coast, to have her senior portraits done here; something a little different than what they would have there. We went over to the entrance to the to the labyrinth to create some images and while I was setting up, noticed she was swaying ever so slightly, “Alright… you HAVE to keep doing that for this image and have fun with it!” While it did create one of my favorite images from the session, what I loved was when we were meeting back up with her family, a little skip in her step, and she exclaimed “I got to twirl!”

Had an awesome engagement session with Jessica and Paul, despite the mosquitos. They were absolutely brutal! The mosquitos that is, Jessica and Paul were great! After getting started on Campus at UW (I’m still amazed how much that place has changed since my college days) we went up to an area just off of Happy Jack that they picked. Paul had helped create a bouldering guide for the area and wanted to get a photo at a formation called Heart Rock…. Totally appropriate!

What a Great Time! This was our first time to the Rock Springs Bridal Show and it was a blast! We came in Friday night so we had plenty of time to relax and spend some time with our friends, Kati and Levi. They took us Bitter Creek Brewing for dinner, and while you would normally think “burgers” for a place like this, they had some amazing pasta! We got started nice and early, Starbucks in hand, and ready to go (yes, I’m a Starbucks JUNKIE!).

With Erin helping with the booth, I was able to take some time to capture the event… the people, the fashions, and most of all, the fun! The guys doing the modeling for the day were really hamming it up, you gotta love that kind of energy. The brides and grooms that were there with were great! It truly is amazing seeing the excitement on people’s faces as they talk about their wedding day. I look forward to talking more with many of them!
